Sweat is your body’s way of cooling itself down. Sweat is composed mostly of water, but also contains sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and magnesium along with biological byproducts like lactic acid and urea. When your body gets overheated, such as during exercise or when you’re outside on a hot day, it produces sweat as a cooling mechanism.

Excessive sweating can be frustrating and embarrassing! Everybody is unique, so excessive sweating can be caused by a few different factors. Here are some top reasons why you might be experiencing excessive sweating:
Sweating is your body’s way of regulating your body temperature. Your body produces sweat to cool you down and lower your internal temperature. Sweating is normal (and necessary!), but sometimes you’d like to control sweat and the body odor that may follow.
When controlling sweat, it’s key to identify the reason why you’re sweating. Do you workout a lot? Do you sweat during presentations or stressful events? Once you identify the cause of sweat, you can work to prevent it by making adjustments to your diet, activity level, and deodorant choices! Use an Antiperspirant
The easiest way to manage sweat production is by applying an antiperspirant. Antiperspirants work by temporarily plugging your sweat glands to reduce sweat throughout the day. Antiperspirants are different from deodorants in that their main function is to prevent sweat.
If your primary concern is excessive sweating, apply an antiperspirant to your underarms to prevent sweat stains. To make your antiperspirant more effective, we recommend applying it to clean, dry skin. Surprisingly, the best time to apply antiperspirant is at night. This way, the formula has time to soak into your skin and help control sweat the next day.
Wear Breathable Fabrics
Wearing thick clothing can cause your body to overheat, which can lead to excessive sweating. Help control sweat by wearing light, breathable fabrics. These types of clothes keep your body cool by offering better ventilation and expelling excess heat from the surface of your skin.
If you spend lots of time in the sun, the color of your clothing may play a role in how much you sweat. Dark clothing absorbs more heat. If you notice that you’re sweating a lot when you’re out and about, switch to lighter colored clothes. Lighter colors, like white, will reflect light from the sun and not get as hot.

Additional activities, like exercising or spending time outside in hot weather, can cause your body to sweat. In both these cases, your body is trying to cool down your system by sweating.
By learning how your body reacts to different scenarios and activities, you can learn the best ways to control your sweat. If you’re an excessive sweater, you may want to carry an extra set of clothing, antiperspirant deodorant, and body wipes for unexpected sweat emergencies. Additionally, keep your body cool by drinking lots of water to stay hydrated.
Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition in which patients experience excessive sweating. It is rare, but your doctor can run tests to see if you have this condition. Patients with hyperhidrosis may sweat while sleeping or during other non-sweat-inducing activities. This type of excessive sweating is caused because your sweat glands do not turn off. If you have hyperhidrosis, you may notice excessive sweating on your hands, underarms, or face even if you’re not working out or if it’s not excessively hot.
Remember, sweating is completely normal and everybody sweats! But, if you notice that you feel like you sweat too much or if you’re suddenly sweating more than you usually do, talk to your doctor. Excessive sweating can be a symptom of certain illnesses, so your doctor can determine if medical intervention is right for you. For example, patients with hyperhidrosis tend to experience excessive sweat even if they’re not exercising or spending time in hot weather. Depending on your situation and the severity of your sweating, your doctor may suggest oral medications, botox injections, or surgery.
